The Little Wins That Keep Me Motivated to Learn Languages
Not long ago, a French girl walked into our office, looking for some information. She asked if anyone could speak English, and I confidently replied, “Yes, I can.”
We ended up having a full conversation about work-related matters, and then we shifted to a more casual chat in English. As I spoke with her, I felt an overwhelming sense of pride. Here I was, communicating effectively in a language that wasn’t my mother tongue!
This experience reminded me that all the hours spent learning and practicing were worth it. It was a validation of my efforts and a clear indication that I was on the right track.
Another source of motivation for me is when I travel.
I always make an effort to speak the native language of the country I’m visiting.
I’ve always received positive feedback on my pronunciation and communication skills. The smiles and encouragement from locals make me feel accomplished and remind me of the real-world application of my language skills.
These little wins are powerful motivators.
They show me that my hard work is paying off and that I’m capable of connecting with others in meaningful ways.
Whether it’s a conversation at work or an interaction during my travels, these experiences keep me motivated and remind me why I embarked on this language-learning journey.
Every step forward, no matter how small, is a step towards achieving my dream of becoming a polyglot.
